Greenhouse Gardening
Those who live in areas of cold climates with at least five months of winter early, it is difficult to have a vegetable garden and to enjoy fresh vegetables for a long period. This is why a greenhouse is the best solution for gardening in such climates. Gardening inside a greenhouse allows for the growing season to extend much before and after the normal season of outdoor gardening in a cold climate. There are plants which can grow the entire year inside a greenhouse. You can even grow some plants which wouldn’t grow at all in the cold climate, but can adjust to a warmer environment provided by the greenhouse.
If you want to start greenhouse gardening, you should be aware of the temperature difference between outside and inside environment, which can reach up to 40 degrees. This is very good for the cold months of winter, extended to autumn and spring, too. However, it becomes a problem during the hot summer. A too high temperature inside the greenhouse can cause serious damage to the plants. What you can do is to install a shade cloth to protect the plants from the hot sun of summer months.
Another measure you can take before even having the greenhouse built is to align the roofline on the east-west direction. This way the roof’s largest area is exposed to the south. By doing this, you are achieving two important results: the shade cloth which you may be using will be required only for the roof side facing south, which implies less material and saving money. The second result is that the greenhouse will benefit of the maximum sun light at noon, which means that during the cold months you’ll get the maximum light possible and it is then that you most need it.
